Pregnancy presents an interesting challenge when doing blood chemistry and CBC analysis. The demands placed upon the body’s normal physiology and biochemistry during this period of rapid growth and development will cause many of the values to be outside of their optimal level. This should not necessarily be viewed as indicative of a disease process. The following represents some of the “normal” changes associated with pregnancy.

Throughout Pregnancy

Late pregnancy

  1. Decreased Albumin
  2. Increased Serum cholesterol, LDL and triglycerides
  3. Increased Blood glucose
  4. Decreased HGB and HCT
  5. Increased MCV and MCH
  6. Decreased RBC
  7. Decreased T-3 uptake
  8. Increased T-4 (2nd and 3rd trimester)
  9. Decreased Total protein
  10. Decreased Uric acid
  11. Decreased Creatinine
  12. Decreased BUN
  13. Increased Alkaline phosphatase
  14. Decreased SGOT
  15. Increased ESR (2nd and 3rd trimester)
  1. Decreased lymphocytes
  2. Increased Neutrophils
  3. Increased Total WBCs
  4. Decreased Calcium
  5. Decreased Total protein
